Emory Proton Therapy Center honors patients on second anniversary

The Emory Proton Therapy Center celebrates its second anniversary this month and has reached an important milestone: treating its 1000th patient. The center, which opened in 2018, is the first in Georgia that offers proton beam therapy, an advanced radiation oncology treatment option for patients with many types of cancer.

Engineered virus could be new weapon against metastatic cancer
Emory and Case Western Reserve investigators have re-engineered human adenovirus to target metastatic cancer cells without triggering the body’s immune defenses. The study, which includes Dmitry Shayakhmetov, PhD and Svetlana Atasheva, PhD, was published on Nov. 25 in Science Translational Medicine.

Eun-Ok Im selected for Outstanding Nurse Scientist Award
The Council of Advancement of Nursing Science (CANS) has selected Eun-Ok Im, PhD, MPH, RN, CNS, FAAN as the recipient of the 2020 Outstanding Nurse Scientist Award. Im was honored with the award at the virtual CANS 2020 State of the Science Congress on Nursing Research held this fall.

Saba named department vice chair for quality and safety
The Emory Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology has announced Nabil Saba, MD as vice chair for quality and safety. In this role, Saba will oversee quality and patient safety for the department, working closely with counterparts across the health system to align these strategies.

Whitehair named director of operations at Midtown
Lynn Whitehair has been named director of operations for Winship at Emory Midtown, effective Nov. 30. Whitehair will play a key role in supporting Winship's patient-centered care model and help the team grow into the new Winship at Emory Midtown facility.
Winship research featured at urologic oncology meeting
Winship urologists, including Vikram Narayan, MD, were featured at the Annual Meeting of the Society of Urologic Oncology, held virtually Dec. 3-5. Narayan presented research on a novel intravesical gene-mediated therapy for patients with high-grade, BCG-unresponsive non-muscle invasive bladder cancer.
