A milestone year for Winship clinical trials

Thanks to the hard work of the members of Winship's clinical trials office, physicians, and staff, many more patients are benefiting from cancer clinical trials. These trials not only provide new treatment options right now, but also generate invaluable clinical research to benefit future patients. Winship will hold a special breakfast event on Feb. 26, 7:30 - 8:30am to recognize this milestone year for clinical trials and the people who helped make it happen.

Winship names McBride new associate director

Colleen McBride, PhD, the Grace Crum Rollins Chair of Behavioral Sciences and Health Education, has been named Winship's associate director for community outreach and engagement. In her new role, McBride will oversee Winship’s work in areas such as cancer health disparities, recruitment of underserved populations to clinical trials, cancer prevention and cancer control interventions.

Winship experts contribute to ASCO report

Drs. R. Donald Harvey and Jane Meisel are part of the 25-person editorial team of national experts that contributed to Clinical Cancer Advances 2020, an annual report on progress against cancer from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) released on Feb. 4.

Cardiac study evaluates immune checkpoint inhibitors

Anant Mandawat, MD and international collaborators evaluated global longitudinal strain, a sensitive cardiac marker, and its association with cardiac events in patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors. The results were published Feb. 5 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Emory and Atlanta Hawks partner on prostate cancer screening initiative

Emory Healthcare is partnering with the Atlanta Hawks and the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation for the Black History Month Assist Challenge to encourage African-American men to get screened for prostate cancer. Drs. Karen Godette and Bradley Carthon joined NBA star Grant Hill in a video supporting the initiative.

Winship celebrates Women Physicians Day

Winship celebrated National Women Physicians Day on Feb. 3. The day marks the birthday of Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States. The Women in Winship committee hosted a luncheon and discussion led by Amy Langston, MD that addressed topics including mentorship, self-advocacy, and women's empowerment.

Shared Resource spotlight: Emory Integrated Proteomics

Winship's 10 shared resources offer advanced technologies and services to support cancer researchers. The Emory Integrated Proteomics Shared Resource offers protein analytical services using mass spectrometry for peptide identification, post-translational modifications, isobaric and label-free quantification, and bioinformatic analysis.

Lori Little receives travel grant

Winship physician assistant Lori Little, MMSc, PA-C has received a travel grant from the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (AHPBA) on the strength of her proposal to develop an educational website for advanced practice providers. Little will attend the AHPBA annual meeting March 5-8 in Miami Beach.

Winship holds 5th Annual Puri Memorial Lecture

Lisa Rimsza, MD (pictured), from Mayo Clinic Arizona, delivered the 5th Annual Surinder K. Puri Memorial Lecture on Feb. 7 in Winship's John H. Kauffman Auditorium. The annual lectureship focuses on B-cell malignancies and was established by Puri's wife to help accelerate advances in this area.

Call for NCI ComboMATCH concepts

NRG Oncology is seeking concepts for the NCI ComboMATCH study. This trial will focus on rational combinations of agents supported by preclinical in vivo evidence. Interested applicants may submit completed forms to ocearbhr@mskcc.org by Feb. 18.
