Winship Invest$ names pilot grant recipients

Twelve Winship investigators will receive over $750,000 in funding for new cancer research projects through Winship Invest$. The selected proposals include two pilot grants funded in part by contributions from the Oliver S. and Jennie R. Donaldson Charitable Trust.

Nooka named medical director of Winship Research Informatics
Ajay Nooka, MD, MPH has been named medical director of the Winship Research Informatics Shared Resource, whose comprehensive services include cohort discovery, data analytics and management, web and mobile app development, clinical annotation for disease specific projects, and access to large national datasets.

Supercharged reoviruses harnessed against breast cancer
Bernardo Mainou, PhD and colleagues generated two novel reoviruses that, in the presence of infection, can be optimized to infect and kill triple-negative breast cancer cells. The data, first published in the Journal of Virology, was presented by doctoral student Jameson Berry on Jan. 28 at Emory's GDBBS research symposium.

Graham and Wechsler elected to ASPHO leadership
Drs. Douglas Graham (right) and Daniel Wechsler (left) have been elected to leadership positions on the Board of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (ASPHO). Graham was voted as President-elect and Wechsler was appointed as a Trustee-at-Large for a second three-year term.

Winship to host National Lung Cancer SPORE Workshop in Atlanta

Winship will host the National Lung Cancer SPORE Workshop June 17-18 on the Emory campus. The annual meeting brings together Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) investigators, patient and research advocates, National Cancer Institute representatives, and lung cancer experts from across the U.S. Abstracts for oral and poster presentations are due May 8.

Curran presents at UK thoracic oncology meeting
Walter J. Curran, Jr., MD presented research on state-of-the-art radiotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer at the British Thoracic Oncology Group Annual Conference, held Jan. 29-31 in Dublin, Ireland.
 
  
Winship melanoma specialists hold retreat
Winship clinicians and researchers held a retreat on Jan. 24 focused on collaborating to improve the care and experience of patients with melanoma in the region. The participants, who ranged from trainees to professors, represented nearly a dozen Emory departments and centers.
