Highly invasive lung cancer cells have longer "fingers"

Winship researchers Janna K. Mouw, PhD, Emily Summerbell, PhD, and their colleagues have found that finger-like projections called filopodia drive invasive behavior in a rare subset of lung cancer cells. Their results were published July 24 in Science Advances.

Drs. Andres Chang and Christina Caruso are the recipients of the 2020 American Society of Hematology (ASH) Research Training Award for Fellows. The year-long program aims to encourage careers in academic hematology by providing protected research time during training.

In Remembrance: Douglas Murray, MD

Douglas R. Murray, MD, professor emeritus in the Emory Department of Surgery and former Winship surgical oncologist, died last week due to complications from cancer. Dr. Murray was known as a compassionate physician and an expert in the continuum of surgical and medical strategies for treating melanoma, soft tissue sarcomas, head and neck carcinomas, breast carcinoma, and hepatic and gastrointestinal tumors. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be considered to the Judith J. and Douglas R. Murray Surgical Oncology Melanoma Research Fellowship Endowment of Emory University.

The Citizen Science HD Big Data Academy, led by Drs. Adam Marcus and Theresa Gillespie, finished its second session of the summer on July 17. Now in its 3rd year, the academy uses real data from patients to teach students how to mine huge data sets (big data), a fundamental part of many cancer research projects.

Student awardees, selected by the program co-directors, are Megan Hong, Joanna Andrews, and Amitesh Verma. Faculty awardees, voted on by the students, are Drs. Gregg Orloff, Aneesh Mehta, and Vikas Gupta.
