Winship physicians featured in annual 'Top Doctors' list

Nearly half of the physicians recognized in the 2020 'Top Doctors' issue of Atlanta magazine are physicians within Emory Healthcare, Emory Healthcare Network, Emory medical staff, or faculty of Emory University School of Medicine. More than 60 of the physicians on the list are involved in the diagnosis and treatment of patients at Winship.

McBride receives U01 for ovarian cancer intervention
Colleen McBride, PhD has received a U01 grant from the National Cancer Institute to collaborate on a scalable, message-based outreach intervention to reach ovarian cancer survivors and close relatives at elevated risk. The project, which could be expanded to other states and other heritable cancers, is a partnership with the Georgia Cancer Registry and community cancer organizations in the state.

Atlanta researchers collaborate on NIH exercise study
Eric Ortlund, PhD and Georgia Tech’s Facundo Fernández, PhD are principal investigators for the Atlanta-based research group participating in the NIH-funded Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium (MoTrPAC). The multi-institutional study will collect and turn data from nearly 2,600 volunteers into comprehensive maps of the molecular changes in the body due to exercise.

The Biostatistics Shared Resource provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary collaboration in the design and analysis of clinical, preclinical, basic science, and epidemiologic investigations as well as experiments that involve data from high throughput technologies.

Mascaro receives K01 for compassion meditation study
Jennifer Mascaro, PhD has received a K01 award from the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health to support an evidence-based compassion meditation program for patients receiving hematopoietic stem cell transplants. This bedside intervention, which will be delivered by hospital chaplains, seeks to reduce depression and improve quality of life during cancer treatment.

Shaib to deliver Winship virtual Grand Rounds on July 8
Winship virtual Grand Rounds continues on July 8 with Walid Shaib, MD, who will present, "An Update on Pancreatic Cancer Novelties and Treatment Modalities." Winship Grand Rounds are held on Wednesdays from 7:30 - 8:30am. Attendees can participate via Zoom webinar and sign a virtual attendance list to receive continuing medical education (CME) credit.

Winship names Elkin Fellows and Rochfort Scholars

Ten Winship trainees in hematology and medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgery, and neurosurgery are recipients of this year's Nell W. and William Simpson Elkin Fellowship and Chester Rochfort Scholarship. Each award comes with an endowment of up to $35,000 to help cover salary, laboratory costs, and other research-related expenses.

New pharmacy and infusion center open ahead of major hospital expansion

Winship at Emory Johns Creek Hospital recently opened a new, state-of-the-art infusion pharmacy and expanded the infusion center to better serve patients. The expansion continues: Emory Johns Creek Hospital broke ground on its $30 million expansion project that will add three new floors to the existing four-story building in Physician’s Plaza as well as a dedicated Winship entrance.
