New shared resource advances bioinformatics and systems biology at Winship

Winship has launched a new shared resource that builds on Emory’s existing strengths in informatics, data, and computational sciences. The Bioinformatics and Systems Biology (BiSB) Shared Resource, led by Manoj Bhasin, PhD, is Winship’s eleventh core facility to offer specialized scientific technologies, services, and expertise that facilitate cancer research.

Aflac Cancer Center ranks among best in the nation
The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta is ranked #7 in the nation for pediatric cancer on the 2020-2021 U.S. News & World Report's Best Children's Hospitals list. Children's Healthcare of Atlanta had four specialties ranked in the top 10 and eight specialties ranked in the top 20.

More than two dozen Winship investigators will be part of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Virtual Meeting II, which will take place online, June 22-24, 2020. The program will highlight the latest cancer research discoveries through both on-demand and scheduled streaming content.

Study evaluates mental health outcomes of cancer survivors
A population-based study by Drs. Xu Ji, Janet Cummings, Jordan Marchak, Xuesong Han, and Ann Mertens showed an elevated prevalence of mental health problems among adult cancer survivors. Their findings were published on June 15 in Cancer.

Blazeck receives Beckman Young Investigator Award
John Blazeck, PhD has received a Young Investigator Award from the Beckman Foundation. The award will support his research project, "Synthetic antibody repertoires for vaccine development, therapeutic isolation, and the study of adaptive immunity."

Kucuk to speak at Eurasian Uro-Oncology Congress
Omer Kucuk, MD will present “Integrative Oncology in Prostate Cancer” at the 10th Eurasian Uro-oncology Congress, June 27-28. The virtual meeting will be held in both Turkish and English, with simultaneous translation available.

Winship celebrates radiation oncology residents
On June 17, the Department of Radiation Oncology honored this year's graduating class of physician residents: Drs. Mustafa Abugideiri, Zachary Buchwald, Daniel Tanenbaum, and Sibo Tian. The socially-distanced ceremony was attended by department leaders and live-streamed to colleagues, family, and friends.

Emory Johns Creek Hospital breaks ground on expansion project
Emory Johns Creek Hospital held a virtual groundbreaking event on June 16 to celebrate the expansion of the medical office building. Attendees watched via live stream as leaders broke ground on the new construction project that will add three new floors for patients.
 
  
Brown receives outstanding fellow award
Jaqueline Brown, MD received the most outstanding hematology/oncology fellow award from the Emory J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency Program. Brown was recognized at the program’s annual event hosted by Emory’s Department of Internal Medicine.

Virtual symposium to highlight summer scholars’ research

On July 9 and 10, a group of 19 high school students will present research projects they completed as part of the Winship Summer Scholars Research Program. During the six-week virtual program, students participate in web-based lectures by Winship specialists, weekly journal club meetings, and other small group activities. The two-part final symposium will be held via Zoom from 10am - 12pm each day.
