Winship and the Atlanta Falcons team up to deliver "Crucial Catch" message

Stephen Szabo, MD talked with quarterback Matt Ryan about the importance of detecting cancer early, part of Winship's partnership with the Atlanta Falcons for October's Crucial Catch campaign. Their conversation and a patient story are featured on the Crucial Catch website. Winship patients were also honored during the Falcons-Panthers game on Oct. 11.

HPV vaccine promotion: the church as an agent of change
Winship and Emory investigators led a case study of HPV and HPV vaccine perceptions within an African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church, which could inform future health promotion efforts in other religious settings. The study, published in Social, Science and Medicine, was supported by a supplement to Winship’s Cancer Center Support Grant.

Sequential therapy with pembrolizumab effective for classical Hodgkin lymphoma
Pamela Allen, MD and colleagues showed that brief pembrolizumab monotherapy followed by AVD was effective and safe in patients with newly diagnosed classical Hodgkin lymphoma, including those with bulky disease. Allen is lead author of the multicenter phase II study published on Sept. 29 in Blood.

Atlanta Lung Cancer Symposium to feature Winship specialists
Chaired by Drs. Suresh Ramalingam, Taofeek Owonikoko, and Kristin Higgins the virtual Atlanta Lung Cancer Symposium will be held on Nov. 7. The multidisciplinary program will feature international experts including seven Winship specialists.

Nominations are due Oct. 30 for the annual Robert L. "Bobby" Rearden, Jr. Spirit of Winship Award, which recognizes one faculty or staff member and one volunteer who exemplify Winship's culture of caring. Rearden, who passed away in 2015, served on Winship’s External Advisory Board.

Winship welcomes Fall APP fellows
Julie Caperton, FNP-BC and Kayla Freeman, DNP, APRN, FNP-C are Winship's Fall 2020 Advanced Practice Providers (APP) Fellowship Program fellows. The one-year program provides training in hematology, medical oncology, bone marrow transplant, and radiation oncology.
