Winship community signs steel beam for new building

Last week, members of the Winship community had the chance to make a permanent mark on the new Winship Emory Midtown building when a steel construction beam traveled to five locations, Aug. 9-12. The beam will be installed later this month during a “topping off” ceremony signifying the completion of a building's structure.

Wells receives R01 grant for HPV vaccine intervention
Jessica Wells, PhD, RN, WHNP-BC, has received an R01 from the National Institute of Nursing Research for the project, “Implementing an evidence-based, multilevel intervention to promote HPV vaccination among HIV positive adults." Three HIV clinics in Georgia will be part of the intervention to reduce HPV-related cancers.

Alese honored with Kern Fellowship
Olatunji Alese, MD, has been named to the inaugural cohort of the Kern Fellowship in Interprofessional Leadership. Co-sponsored by the Woodruff Health Educators Academy and the Kern Foundation, the nine-month program provides leadership development for outstanding early- to mid-career health sciences educators and practitioners.

Fox-Goharioon named ICI’s interim technical director
Laura Fox-Goharioon has been named interim technical director for the Integrated Cellular Imaging (ICI) Core, one of Winship’s 11 shared resources. She has been training scientists on advanced research technologies for more than 35 years at Emory and has been a member of the imaging core for the last decade.

Expert panel releases clinical practice guideline on immunotherapy for breast cancer
The Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) convened a multidisciplinary panel of experts, including Kevin Kalinsky, MD, MS, to provide recommendations on immunotherapy for the treatment of breast cancer. The panel's clinical practice guideline was published on Aug. 13 in the Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer.

Drs. Anita Corbett, Jennifer Spangle, and Homa Ghalei share advice on creating and sustaining healthy mentoring relationships in a commentary published Aug. 7 in The Journal of Biological Chemistry. The commentary highlights approaches for supporting colleagues in STEM, with an emphasis on going beyond formal mentoring committees.
