Lesinski named associate director for basic research

Gregory Lesinski, PhD, MPH, has been named Winship Cancer Institute's associate director for basic research, effective Sept. 1. In this role, he will provide oversight and direction for the development and growth of Winship's basic scientific activities across the cancer center's four research programs.

Carthon named interim director of medical oncology
Bradley Carthon, MD, PhD, has been named interim director for the Division of Medical Oncology in Emory’s Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology. Carthon also serves as section chief of hematology and oncology for Winship at Emory University Hospital Midtown.

Jessica Wells, PhD, RN, WHNP-BC, has been selected for induction as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN). Wells is one of nine members of Emory's Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing community who will be confirmed as an AAN fellow this October.

Sunil Badve, MD, FRCPath, has joined Winship as a professor and vice chair of the cancer pathology program in Emory’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. His translational research focus includes the development of novel approaches to detecting, diagnosing, and treating breast cancer.

Heat-controllable CAR T cells destroy tumors, prevent relapse
Winship member Gabe Kwong, PhD, graduate student Ali Zamat, and collaborators are working to make CAR T cell therapy more effective in solid tumors. Their new study, published Aug. 12 in Nature Biomedical Engineering, found that heat-controllable CAR T cells destroy tumors and prevent relapse in mice.
