Cancer and its treatment could impact survivors’ ability to work, says national report

Deborah Watkins Bruner, PhD, RN, FAAN and colleagues contributed to a new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, which found that although cancer survivors are living longer, cancer and its treatment can result in lasting or late-onset impairments that may affect their ability to work. The report was commissioned by the U.S. Social Security Administration to inform disability determinations for cancer survivors.

Yang receives R01 to develop nanoparticle-driven immunotherapy
Lily Yang, MD, PhD has received a National Cancer Institute R01 grant to develop a targeted immunotherapy that can treat patients with cancer and comorbid atherosclerosis. The research is expected to generate preclinical data for a future phase I clinical trial. Co-investigators include Drs. Lei Zhu, Charles Staley, Bassel El-Rayes, and Hanjoong Jo.

Collaborators receive R01 for “Smoke-Free SafeCare” intervention
Michelle Kegler, DrPh, MPH and Georgia State University's Shannon Self-Brown, PhD have received a National Cancer Institute R01 grant to develop “Smoke-Free SafeCare.” The hybrid type 1 trial will be disseminated to families with young children in the child protection system, a high-risk group for tobacco-related cancer disparities.

Janice Newsome, MD, FSIR has been named co-editor-in-chief of Techniques in Vascular and Interventional Radiology. The quarterly review is for physicians and allied health professionals interested in image-guided minimally-invasive therapies.

Phase I unit receives award for high patient satisfaction
The Winship Phase I Clinical Trials Unit achieved patient satisfaction scores above the top 90th percentile in the country for FY20. The team has earned this award each year since the new unit opened in the Emory University Hospital Tower in 2019.
