Winship researchers receive collaborative pilot grants

Two Winship research teams have been awarded pilot grants from the Donaldson Charitable Trust Research Synergy Fund, a unique funding opportunity offered jointly by Winship, the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, and the Wallace H. Capivasertib shows promise in patients with rare tumor mutation
Kevin Kalinsky, MD, MS and colleagues found that patients with AKT1 E17K-mutated metastatic tumors had a clinically significant response to capivasertib, an oral drug that targets AKT. The results of this non-randomized, NCI-sponsored trial (MATCH subprotocol EAY131-Y) were published on Dec. 30 in JAMA Oncology.

Winship specialists to participate in ASCO GI symposium
Drs. Mehmet Akce, Olatunji Alese, and Walid Shaib will present research during the colorectal cancer and pancreatic cancer poster sessions at the 2021 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium, taking place virtually Jan. 15-17. Shishir Maithel, MD, MS is a member of the meeting’s steering committee.

Cunningham to lead resilience session for Emory nurses
Tim Cunningham, RN, DrPH, vice president of practice and innovation at Emory Healthcare, will lead a virtual resilience session for nurses on Jan. 21 from 5-6pm. The free session, “Riding the third wave: Resilience in 2021,” will provide feasible, evidenced-based techniques for teams and individuals to practice resilience.

OncLive's State of the Summit, “Institutional Perspectives in Cancer: Breast Cancer,” will be held virtually on Jan. 21 from 6:30 to 8pm. Kevin Kalinsky, MD, MS will chair the free educational webinar that will include presentations from Drs. Manali Bhave, Keerthi Gogineni, and Jane Meisel.

Call for abstracts: DDT Program virtual $hark Tank competition
Emory faculty, research associates, and postdocs are invited to participate in Winship's 3rd Annual Discovery and Developmental Therapeutics (DDT) $hark Tank Competition on Feb. 19. The top three proposals will receive $6,500 toward a Winship Shared Resource. Abstracts are due Feb. 10.

The Annual Southeastern Pediatric Research Conference, "Paradigm Changing Innovation & Promoting Health Equity," will be held on June 11. Faculty, trainees, students, and staff are invited to submit child health research abstracts by March 21 for oral and poster presentation.
