Winship Scientific Symposium: Register and final call for video abstracts

The annual Winship Scientific Symposium, taking place virtually Dec. 2-3, will commemorate 50 years of the National Cancer Act and its continued impact on Winship Cancer Institute's pioneering research and discoveries. The symposium will include a keynote talk from Skip Trump, MD; scientific talks from faculty across Winship's four research programs; and a video poster session and oral abstracts showcasing student and trainee research. Video abstracts are due Nov. 15.

Effect of immunotherapy time-of-day infusion among patients with melanoma
A team of Winship radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, and cancer immunologists report that time-of-day infusion of immunotherapy for metastatic melanoma may impact overall survival. Results of the study, led by first author David Qian, MD, PhD, and Zachary Buchwald, MD, PhD, were published in The Lancet Oncology on Nov. 12.

Proposed synthetic biosensors detect metastasizing cancer
The National Institutes of Health has awarded Gabe Kwong, PhD (left), nearly $3 million to develop a new class of synthetic biosensors that could alert doctors to signs of metastasis in patients undergoing treatment for cancer. Peng Qiu, PhD (right), will co-lead the study using computational modeling to characterize the kinetics of the proposed sensors and simulating various scenarios.

Boise named to CABTRAC board
Lawrence Boise, PhD, has been named to the board of directors of the Cancer Biology Training Consortium (CABTRAC). The non-profit membership organization dedicated to improving graduate, medical, and postdoctoral training for the next generation of cancer researchers.

Perkins highlighted in Emory Veterans Day feature
Winship senior nurse manager Deatra Perkins, RN, BSN, OCN, was one of eight Emory veterans and active duty service members who reflected on how military service shapes their impact at Emory. Perkins was an enlisted member of the Army Reserve before joining the Navy Nurse Corps as a commissioned officer.
