Virtual summit to feature UGA and Winship research

The UGA-Winship Virtual Summit, "Advancing Cancer Research in Georgia," a half-day event on Oct. 29, will highlight innovative cancer research from the University of Georgia and Winship Cancer Institute. Madhusmita Behera, PhD, has been named Winship's chief informatics and data officer. The newly created position will drive digital transformation and research growth through innovation and the implementation of technology that can positively affect patient care, outcomes, and safety.

Aman Chhabra, MS, has been named Winship's chief business officer. The new position will oversee the fiscal management of all Winship operating units, including administration, basic and translational science research programs, clinical research, shared resources, and the Winship Cancer Network.

Bellamkonda receives NIH Transformative Research Award
Ravi Bellamkonda, PhD, has received a five-year NIH Director’s Transformative Research Award for his work using electrical fields to treat an aggressive pediatric cancer. Low-voltage electrical fields will induce cancer cells to migrate out of the tissues they have invaded: a strategy he calls a “tumor tractor beam.”

Fleischer receives NIH New Innovator Award
Candace Fleischer, PhD, has received a five-year NIH Director’s New Innovator Award to support her project, “A novel framework for quantifying metabolic brain health.” Using magnetic resonance imaging in new ways to study metabolic disease, the research could offer insights into other conditions ranging from Alzheimer's disease and brain injury to cancer.

Mouw receives NCI Research Specialist Award
Janna Mouw, PhD, a member of Marcus lab, has received a National Cancer Institute (NCI) Research Specialist Award (R50) for her project, “Deconstructing cellular heterogeneity and subpopulation cooperation in non-small cell lung cancer metastasis.” The grant provides salary support for exceptional scientists to pursue research within an existing NCI-funded cancer research program.

Investigators receive Winship Lung Cancer SPORE pilot grants
The Winship Lung Cancer Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) offers pilot grants of up to $50,000 each to support projects focused on career enhancement or developmental research. The 2021 Career Enhancement and Developmental Research program pilot grant recipients are Drs. Ahmet Coskun, Aparna Kesarwala, John Blazeck, and Wei Zhou.
