11th Winship 5K raises spirits and more than $800K

Winship Cancer Institute welcomed more than 1,500 in-person runners and hundreds more virtually to the 11th annual Winship Win the Fight 5K Run/Walk on Oct. 2. Winship's first-ever hybrid road race exceeded its goal by raising over $800,000 for cancer research.

Winship receives P30 supplement in pediatric cancer survivorship
Drs. Jordan Gilleland Marchak and Karen Effinger are co-leading a new administrative supplement to Winship’s Cancer Center Support Grant (P30) to study how institutions can support childhood cancer survivors by improving the transition from the pediatric to adult care setting. Co-investigators are Drs. Ann Mertens, Natia Esiashvili, and Traci Leong.

Cherven receives NIH K23 award
Brooke Cherven, PhD, MPH, RN, CPON, has received a K23 career development award from the National Institute of Nursing Research. The grant will support Cherven’s patient-oriented research into the perceived reproductive health needs of young adult female cancer survivors and identify decisional and contextual factors that influence fertility status assessments.

Gbolahan joins Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology
Olumid Gbolahan, MD, who specializes in treating patients with gastrointestinal cancers, has joined Winship as an assistant professor of hematology and medical oncology. His translational research interests focus on hepatobiliary and pancreatic malignancies and drug development.

Schneider named interim director of Cancer Tissue and Pathology
Frank Schneider, MD, has been named interim director of Cancer Tissue and Pathology, one of Winship’s 11 shared resources. The Cancer Tissue and Pathology Shared Resource facilitates discovery by providing high-quality human cancer specimens and comprehensive histopathologic services to cancer researchers.

Registration opens for UGA-Winship Virtual Summit

The UGA-Winship Virtual Summit, "Advancing Cancer Research in Georgia," will be held on Oct. 29 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by a virtual networking session from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Hosted by the University of Georgia and Winship Cancer Institute, the goal of the summit is to highlight innovative cancer research from the two institutions. The summit is open to all and free to attend.
