Heffner retires after 50 years with Emory
L. Thompson (Tom) Heffner, MD, professor of hematology and medical oncology, retired on April 4 after more than 50 years with Emory. Specializing in hematologic malignancies, Heffner’s career as a physician and clinical researcher has included leadership roles in national cooperative groups and clinical trials, and past president of the Georgia chapter of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
 
  
Stein retires after 40 years with Emory
Sidney Stein, MD, professor of hematology and medical oncology, retired on April 4 after more than four decades with Emory. Stein helped establish a comprehensive hemophilia program at Emory in 1986, and his leadership in the field has included service on the Governor’s Hemophilia Advisory Board. He was honored with the Sidney F. Stein, MD Chair in Hemophilia and Hemostasis in 2014.
 
 
 
     
 
 
Rally grants support Winship pediatric cancer research
Six Winship pediatric cancer researchers have received grants from Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research. The awards to Katharine Brock, MD, MS, Andrew Hong, MD, Xu Ji, PhD, MSPH, Hunter Jonus, PhD, Cheng-Kui Qu, MD, PhD, and Muxiang Zhou, MD, will fund research in hematological malignancies, solid tumors, palliative care and health outcomes.

Prokhnevska receives AAI-Thermo Fisher Trainee Achievement Award
Nataliya Prokhnevska, a PhD student in Emory’s Immunology and Molecular Pathogenesis Graduate Program, has received an AAI-Thermo Fisher Trainee Achievement Award. Prokhnevska and fellow awardees will be honored at the annual meeting of the American Association of Immunologists, taking place in Portland, Ore., May 6-10.

National Proton Conference features Winship speakers
Winship faculty and staff from the Department of Radiation Oncology spoke at the National Proton Conference, April 3-6, in St. Petersburg, Fla. Jeffrey Bradley, MD, Katja Langen, PhD, Amy Breakstone, MPH, and Maya Sabbagh presented on topics ranging from FLASH radiotherapy to treatment planning workflows and patient education.

Call for proposals: Mark Foundation Emerging Leaders Award
The Mark Foundation Emerging Leader Awards support innovative cancer research from the next generation of leaders. Each grant of $250,000 per year for three years ($750,000 total) is awarded to outstanding early career investigators to advance high-impact, high-risk projects that are distinct from the current research portfolio. Letters of intent are due May 2.
