New shared resource hub a one-stop shop for team science

Winship has opened a new shared resource hub on the third floor of Emory Building B on Clifton Road. The 8,800-square-foot newly renovated hub brings under one roof more than half of Winship's 12 shared resources, which provide access to advanced technology and highly specialized expertise to support investigators and their research.

Kang receives new R01 to target cancer metastasis
Sumin Kang, PhD, has received a five-year R01 grant from the National Cancer Institute to evaluate a unique mitochondrial metabolic pathway called saccharopine pathway that promotes cancer metastasis, and to validate the therapeutic potential of targeting this pathway to target metastatic cancers.

Nooka named director of myeloma program
Ajay Nooka, MD, MPH, has been named director of the myeloma program within Emory University School of Medicine's Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology. In this role, Nooka will oversee and support the clinical activities and development of the myeloma team across Winship's campuses.

Cardona to serve on SPORE review panel
Kenneth Cardona, MD, has been invited to serve on the National Cancer Institute's Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) review panel for the 2021 cycle. Cardona and other reviewers will evaluate grant proposals that are designed to accelerate the rapid and efficient movement of basic scientific findings into clinical cancer settings.

Winship launches pre-proposal review service
Winship has launched a new resource for Emory faculty, staff, and trainees to obtain pre-submission feedback on their cancer-related grant proposals. When logged in to Emory's VPN, investigators can access the web-based system, upload proposals or specific aims pages, and receive feedback from Winship's Scientific Research Council.

Anita Corbett, PhD, has been named a fellow of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Corbett and Emory professor Christine Dunham, PhD, are among this year's 28 new fellows recognized for their accomplishments in the field and service to the scientific community.

Inaugural BDCI summit set for March 7
The Emory Biological Discovery through Chemical Innovation (BDCI) summit, "Driving Innovation in Precision Medicine," will take place on March 7. Presented as part of the Constructive Collisions series, the summit will include lightning talks, networking, and a pitch session with on-the-spot funding opportunities for collaborative projects in precision medicine therapeutics.

Erin Peone, RN, MSN, OCN, senior manager of clinical services and operations at Winship's Clifton campus infusion center, has received a Daisy Award, which honors nurses who define patient family care. Temporary chapel space opens during construction
During the renovation of Winship Building C, Winship has established a temporary chapel space in the 4th floor library of Tufts House on Ridgewood Drive. The space, which is equipped with chairs and prayer rugs, offers staff members a quiet place for prayer and reflection, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
 
 
 
     
 
 
Call for proposals: Winship Invest$ pilot grants
With two funding cycles each year, Winship Invest$ supports novel cancer research projects with one-year budgets up to $50,000. The current cycle seeks proposals in precision immunotherapy, cancer disparities, breast cancer, early detection, risk reduction and prevention. Letters of intent are due March 4.

Call for proposals: Elkin Fellowships and Rochfort Scholarships
Open to physicians enrolled in eligible Emory training programs, the Nell W. and William S. Elkin Fellowship in Oncology and the Chester P. Rochfort Scholarship in Oncology support extraordinary physician-scientists with career goals in cancer treatment and research or prevention. Applications are due May 23.
