NIH awards $4 million grant to improve health in diverse communities

An Emory-led team of environmental health scientists and health communication experts has received a grant to support research related to addressing health disparities through transformative communication strategies. Led by Linda McCauley, PhD, RN, dean of Emory's Nell Hodgson School of Nursing, the collaboration includes Winship member Carmen Marsit, PhD, who is project leader of the grant's Development Core.

Olson receives R21 to investigate GLPG-0187 in medulloblastoma
Jeffrey Olson, MD, has received an R21 grant from the National Cancer Institute for his project, “Targeting integrin pathways by GLPG-0187 in medulloblastoma.” The study will investigate the action mechanism of GLPG-0187, a broad-spectrum integrin receptor and promising target of new medulloblastoma therapies.

Nash receives F31 to study cancer outcomes disparities
Rebecca Nash, a doctoral student and advisee of Timothy Lash, DSc, MPH, has received a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (F31) from the National Cancer Institute. The award will support her project, “Methodological and molecular factors underlying racial disparities in cancer outcomes.”

Torres to co-lead NRG Oncology working group
Mylin Torres, MD, has been named co-leader of the Research Implementation Working Group of NRG Oncology's Health Disparities Committee. The committee's overarching goal is to understand and address health disparities in an effort to reduce the unequal burden of cancer in the U.S.

Emory Decatur oncology team receives patient satisfaction award
The Winship outpatient oncology team at Emory Decatur Hospital has received a 2021 Press Ganey award for patient satisfaction. The award honors organizations that have reached the 90th percentile based on Press Ganey patient experience survey responses.
 
 
 
     
 
 
Mason joins Division of Surgical Oncology
Meredith C. Mason, MD, has joined Winship as an assistant professor in the Division of Surgical Oncology of Emory University School of Medicine’s Department of Surgery. She treats tumors of the liver, biliary tract, pancreas and gastrointestinal tract, as well as neuroendocrine tumors, melanoma and sarcoma.

Madabhushi joins Department of Biomedical Engineering
Anant Madabhushi, PhD, will join Emory School of Medicine in July 2022 with a primary faculty appointment in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. His research focuses on developing artificial intelligence to improve outcomes for individuals with cancer and other diseases.

Winship faculty and trainees shared new findings at the American Society of Clinical Oncology's Genitourinary Cancers Symposium, Feb. 17-19. Presenters included Bassel Nazha, MD, MPH, whose multicenter study of somatic alterations in penile squamous cell carcinoma was featured in The ASCO Daily Post.

Co-chaired by C. Arturo Solares, MD, the North American Skull Base Society’s annual meeting was held in Phoenix, Feb 16-20. In addition to Solares, the meeting featured talks from Nabil Saba, MD, and Mihir Patel, MD, and scientific posters from Emory faculty and trainees.

Call for proposals: Winship Catalyst Fund
The Winship Catalyst Fund seeks proposals with budgets of up to $250,000 for the pre-clinical development of new approaches for cancer therapy, diagnostics, or prevention, with the ultimate goal of pursuing an Investigational New Drug application from the FDA. Letters of intent are due Feb. 28.
