Read receives R21 grant for pediatric glioblastoma study
Renee Read, PhD, has received an R21 grant from the National Institutes of Neurological Disorders and Stroke for her project, “MET kinase fusions in pediatric glioblastoma.” Having previously identified fusion mutations in the MET and ALK receptor tyrosine kinases associated with pediatric high-grade gliomas, the research team will evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of tyrosine kinase inhibitors to target these mutations.

Ma receives Michelson Prize for new approach to cancer vaccine development
Rong Ma, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Khalid Salaita, PhD, has received a $150,000 Michelson Prize for her proposal to harness the mechanical processes of cells as a new approach in the long-running quest to develop cancer vaccines. Ma was one of three scientists selected through a rigorous global competition to receive a 2021 Michelson Prize.

Colleen Lewis, NP, and William Murray, MBA, have been named assistant directors of performance improvement for Winship. World Cancer Day nursing symposium to focus on HPV and cancer risk
Winship's World Cancer Day Symposium, “HPV and Cancer Risk,” will be held online from 1 to 2 p.m. on Feb. 4. The free oncology nursing educational event (1.0 CE credit available) will feature Winship panelists Lisa Flowers, MD, Mihir Patel, MD, Kelly Summers, MS, PA-C, Diane Ayers, RN, and Martha Ryan, NP.

Winship hosts Facebook Live on GVHD prevention
In a Facebook Live on Jan. 27, Amelia Langston, MD, and Benjamin Watkins, MD, discussed acute graft versus host disease, a condition that can occur in some adults and children who receive stem cell or bone marrow transplants. Langston and Watkins contributed to studies of the first-ever drug to receive FDA approval to treat the disease.

Kalinsky discusses RxPONDER trial on PQI podcast
Kevin Kalinsky, MD, MS, discussed the RxPONDER trial and other important breast cancer advances on the Jan. 26 episode of PQI Podcast. Kalinsky was lead author of the national RxPONDER study, which found that postmenopausal women with certain types of breast cancer can forgo chemotherapy.
