Winship receives $11 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to improve immunotherapy for lung cancer

Winship has been awarded a P01 program project grant from the National Cancer Institute to support research aimed at improving the effectiveness of immunotherapy for lung cancer in patients with a mutation of the LKB1 gene, a group for whom the present immunotherapy options do not provide robust benefit. The award will provide nearly $11 million over five years to a team of Winship researchers led by Haian Fu, PhD (left), and Suresh Ramalingam, MD (right).

Clinical trial led by Winship shows promise for HNSCC patients
Ninety-one percent of the participants with recurrent or metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) experienced clinical benefit in a phase 2 trial of cabozantinib in combination with pembrolizumab. Winship oncologist Nabil F. Saba, MD, who led the study, recently presented the results during an oral abstract session at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Palmer joins Winship as VP of cancer clinical administration and strategy
Stacy L. Palmer, MBA, joins Winship on June 6 as the new vice president of cancer clinical administration and strategy. Palmer, who served as associate dean for strategic planning and chief of staff at Duke University Medical School, brings to the role more than 25 years of experience in health care delivery systems, academic medicine, life sciences and consulting.

The annual Winship Oncology Nursing Symposium, “Charting Your Path as an Oncology Nurse: Tales from the Trenches,” will be held on Saturday, June 11. The virtual continuing education program, which offers up to 20 contact hours, is complimentary for Emory employees and discounted for participants from other institutions.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released a draft of its Guidelines for Examining Unusual Patterns of Cancer and Environmental Concerns for public comment. Comments are open through the Federal Register until July 25.

Call for proposals: Gabrielle’s Angel grants
Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research is committed to funding innovative, translational proposals and to supporting promising independent early‐career investigators. Projects will be funded for a three‐year period at $75,000 per year. Letters of intent are due June 17.
