| | Chen honored with head and neck society mentorship award | Amy Chen, MD, MPH, has received the Margaret Butler Outstanding Mentor of Women in Head and Neck Surgery Award from the American Head and Neck Society for demonstrating leadership in promoting gender diversity in the field. Chen will also be named chair of the Society’s Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

| | Tracking immune cells in the brain could help fight cancer metastases | Some cancers that start out elsewhere in the body spread into the brain, where they are called brain metastases. Winship and Emory Vaccine Center researchers have obtained a detailed picture of the immune cells present within brain metastases, with an eye toward re-activating and enhancing those cells with cancer immunotherapy. The results were published on April 27 in Cell Reports Medicine.

| | | | Buchwald receives ACS Clinician Scientist Development Grant | Winship radiation oncologist Zachary Buchwald, MD, PhD, has received a five-year, $729,000 Clinician Scientist Development Grant from the American Cancer Society. Buchwald's study will use a novel, radiation-based approach to make immunotherapy more effective against lung cancer and melanoma brain metastases, with the goal of improving outcomes and mitigating the financial hardship and social inequity associated with the disease.
