Uncovering warped protein interactions in cancer

Winship researchers led by Haian Fu, PhD, have revealed widespread distortions of a cell’s protein interaction machinery resulting from cancer-causing mutations and developed a process to map the hidden landscape of anticancer drug opportunities. Is inflammation the link between cancer and depression—and can we screen for it?
A first-ever systematic review and meta-analysis has found that certain measurable indicators of inflammation typically found in patients with cancer may provide a useful, screenable indication as to which of them may be at risk for depression. Winship psychiatrist Andrew H. Miller, MD, is senior author of the study recently published in the journal Cancer.

Fashion a Cure event raises critical funds for women’s cancer research at Winship
The 2022 Friends of Winship Fashion a Cure Fashion Show on May 3 raised more than $280,000 to support Winship research in cancers that affect women. This year's theme was "Around the World" and featured travel-inspired fashions from local boutiques and designers. Models included cancer survivors, caregivers, Winship researchers and volunteers.

Winship investigators receive Georgia CORE grant for phase I trial
Jack Arbiser, MD, PhD, and Lisa Flowers, MD, MPH, have received a $100,000 Collaborative Cancer Research Seed Grant from Georgia CORE. The grant will fund a phase I trial of ACU-D1 for premalignant HPV-related anogenital disease among people living with HIV.

Gillespie will use award to unify health disparities research at Emory
Winship researchers led by Theresa W. Gillespie, PhD, MA, BSN, have received an Imagine, Innovate, and Impact (I3) WOW! Research Award from Emory School of Medicine. The research project, which includes co-investigators Randi Smith, MD, MPH, Joseph Lipscomb, PhD, and Jessica Wells, PhD, RN, will build an Emory initiative for health equity research to reduce health disparities in Georgia.

McCullough leads community forum on GA breast cancer disparities
Lauren E. McCullough, PhD, MSPH, whose research has revealed pronounced race disparities in breast cancer deaths in several Georgia counties, will host a virtual forum on May 17 to share information and gather community input on the possible causes of breast cancer inequities across the state.

Winship launches new Molecular Tumor Board
Chaired by Ludimila Cavalcante, MD, Jennifer Carlisle, MD, and Linsheng Zhang, MD, PhD, Winship's new Molecular Tumor Board will take place twice a month via Zoom, with the first meeting on Monday, May 23. The deadline to submit cases is one week prior to each meeting.
