In a significant step for the treatment of neuroblastoma, an international group of researchers has shown that the targeted therapy lorlatinib is safe and effective in treating high-risk neuroblastoma, prompting a major amendment in a phase 3 Children’s Oncology Group clinical trial and a planned amendment to a European phase 3 trial. Winship researcher Kelly Goldsmith, MD, is lead author of the study, published today in Nature Medicine.
A Winship-led phase 2 clinical trial shows a combination of two drugs was well tolerated and benefitted 91% of participating patients with recurrent/metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. The study, reported today in Nature Medicine, was led by Winship oncologist Nabil F. Saba, MD (pictured), and co-authored by Winship members Yong Teng, PhD, Conor Steuer, MD, and Dong M. Shin, MD, and collaborators from Moffitt Cancer Center.
Timothy L. Lash, DSc, MPH, the O. Wayne Rollins Distinguished Professor of Epidemiology and chair of the Department of Epidemiology at Rollins School of Public Health, has been named Winship’s associate director for population sciences, effective April 1. In this role, Lash will direct the integration and strategic growth of population science-based research throughout Winship and its research programs.
Winship member Edjah Nduom, MD, associate professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Emory University School of Medicine, has been awarded the Daniel Louis Barrow Endowed Chair. The endowed chair was created in 2020 and named in honor of Daniel L. Barrow, MD, the Pamela R. Rollins Chair and professor of neurosurgery and chief of neurosurgery service at Emory Healthcare.
Emory University School of Medicine’s Department of Radiation Oncology announced several new departmental leadership appointments that will take effect April 1. Newly named leaders include Jolinta Lin, MD, Jill Remick, MD, Soumon Rudra, MD, Mohammad Khan, MD, PhD, Pretesh Patel, MD, Kristin Higgins, MD, Shannon Kahn, MD, David Yu, MD, PhD, Xiaofeng Yang, PhD, and Hyunsuk Shim, PhD.
Winship medical oncologist Manali Bhave, MD, has been named interim medical director of the Phase I Clinical Trials Unit at Winship. Working with Phase I Unit Director R. Donald Harvey, PharmD, Bhave will drive the clinical aspects of the unit’s operations and patient care.
Winship members Karmella Haynes, PhD, Hui Mao, PhD, Peng Qiu, PhD, and Susan Thomas, PhD, have been elected as fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in medical and biological engineering.
