Winship Cancer Institute hosted more than 700 communications and development professionals from cancer centers across the country for the annual conference of the National Association of Cancer Center Development Officers (NACCDO) and Public Affairs and Marketing Network (PAMN), April 24-27. Sixteen subject matter experts from Winship, Emory University and Emory Healthcare were among the featured presenters during the four-day educational forum.
Winship members Dong Moon Shin, MD, and Periasamy Selvaraj, PhD,
received a new five-year R01 grant from the National Cancer Institute to develop a novel, personalized vaccine immunotherapy to help more patients with head and neck cancer benefit from immune checkpoint therapies. The vaccine will use membrane vesicles derived from a patient’s own tumor that have been modified to express immune-stimulating molecules, which will then be administered alone and together with an immune checkpoint inhibitor to boost the patient’s immune response against cancer cells.
Following the Georgia Legislature's passage of a bill requiring insurance providers to cover the cost of biomarker testing, FOX5 Atlanta spoke with Winship Executive Director Suresh S. Ramalingam, MD, about the role of biomarker testing in guiding treatment decisions for patients with cancer. Ramalingam previously advocated for the importance of biomarker testing at a March 2022 meeting of the Georgia House of Representatives’ Health and Human Services Committee.
Winship teams led sessions, shared research and served as expert panelists at the Oncology Nursing Society’s 48th annual ONS Congress in San Antonio, April 26-30. Winship posters included a study presented by John Bourgeois, MMHC, BSN, RN, OCN, CCRP, NEA-BC, titled “Workflow Improvements Show Increased Patient and Nurse Satisfaction in a Hybrid Clinical Trial Unit,” which was selected for the Best of Oral Abstracts: Leadership/Management/Education session.
Winship, together with Emory University Hospital Midtown, will soon open a full-service oncology center in Midtown Atlanta. All Emory employees are invited to stop by our open house and take a tour of this brand-new center on Wednesday, May 3, from 4 to 8 p.m.
Winship's Updates in the Management of Head and Neck Cancer Symposium, taking place at the Emory Conference Center Hotel Center on Saturday, May 13, will explore the current treatment paradigms for the multidisciplinary treatment of head and neck cancer.
