Researching Cervical Cancer Developing Novel Therapies at Winship

Thanks to screening methods and early diagnosis, cervical cancer survival rates are improving. Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University, Georgia’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, is initiating, leading and collaborating in lifesaving cervical cancer research.

Types of Cervical Cancer Research

Because cervical cancer prevention methods and screenings are so effective, cervical cancer research has been mostly focused on precision medicine and creating new treatment methods. In addition, several immunotherapy drugs and targeted therapies are actively being studied and show promise for improving treatment and survival rates.

Genetic profiling of the tumor provides pathologists with a better understanding of the tumor’s molecular characteristics. This approach enables more targeted therapies for patients with cervical and other gynecological cancers.

Clinical Trials at Winship

In addition to standard therapy, many Winship patients with cervical cancer are eligible to participate in a clinical trial. Clinical trials are controlled studies that test new interventions on a disease, such as ovarian cancer. They offer participants early access to novel treatments that are not yet commercially available.

Depending on your case, you may be eligible to participate in a clinical trial. Clinical trials provide patients access to new medications that are being developed to treat cervical cancer.
