Researching Gallbladder Cancer Developing Novel Therapies at Winship

Thanks to research being done at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University and other academic medical institutions across the country, advanced detection techniques and treatment methods for gallbladder cancer are improving.

We’re honored to be one of only a few dozen National Cancer Institute (NCI)–designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the country helping to initiate, lead and collaborate in lifesaving gallbladder cancer research.

Types of Gallbladder Cancer Research

Because gallbladder cancer is so rare, there is still much to be discovered about it. In terms of diagnosis, there is some preliminary evidence to suggest that high levels of certain proteins found in the blood may help distinguish which people have gallstones and which have cancer. This could lead to screening options in the future.

When it comes to treatment therapies, several immunotherapy drugs and targeted therapies are actively being studied and show promise for improving treatment and gallbladder cancer survival rates. Combining radiation with chemotherapy — a process called chemoradiation — has shown to be more effective than using them separately. Researchers at Winship are also looking into preoperative systemic therapy to refine treatment options before, during and post-surgery.

Next-generation sequencing and genetic profiling of the gallbladder tumor can also provide us with a better understanding of the tumor’s molecular characteristics. These findings may provide more targeted therapies for patients in the future.

Most clinical trials are supplemental, meaning you’ll still receive the standard therapy in addition to any treatment being studied.
