Researching Ovarian Cancer Developing Novel Therapies at Winship

Ovarian cancer survival rates — and cancer survival rates in general — have improved steadily over the years thanks to research being done at academic cancer centers across the country.

We’re honored to be one of only a few National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the country developing and collaborating on lifesaving cancer research, and more specifically ovarian cancer research initiatives.

Types of Ovarian Cancer Research

Research is necessary to develop new cancer treatments. But it also helps to better our understanding of the disease and how to effectively and completely diagnose it. Winship gynecologic cancer researchers and scientists are leading the way and changing how the world prevents, detects, diagnoses, treats and survives ovarian cancers. We pioneer discoveries in the lab that are translated into the latest most effective treatments in the clinic. Our research in ovarian cancers enables us to discover, develop and deliver game-changing procedures, technologies, diagnostics and treatments. As a result, Winship is advancing ovarian cancer research in every area, including prevention, diagnosis, treatment, symptom reduction, recurrence and more.

We also conduct what is called outcomes research, which involves analyzing vast amounts of data to identify patters of care leading to improvements in survival rates, symptoms and overall health of ovarian cancer patients across the country. We then use the data we gather to analyze characteristics of individuals or tumors, which can predict responses or outcomes of treatment we want to achieve or avoid.

Clinical Trials at Winship

In addition to standard therapy, many Winship patients with ovarian cancer are eligible to participate in a clinical trial. Clinical trials are controlled studies that test new interventions on a disease, such as ovarian cancer. They offer participants early access to novel treatments that are not yet commercially available.

As a research center, we enable our physicians and scientists to match you with an ovarian cancer research trial that targets your unique disease. It’s best if you enroll in the beginning, so let your doctor know on your first visit if you’re interested in learning more about a clinical trial. Most clinical trials are supplemental, meaning you’ll still receive the standard therapy in addition to any treatment being studied in the trial.
