When caught early, localized skin cancers that have not spread beyond the skin to other parts of the body are highly treatable. Removing the cancer at an early stage is often the only step needed for patients to become cancer-free.
In these cases, the skin cancer survival rates are as high as 99 percent, according to the American Cancer Society. For more advanced skin cancers, such as melanoma, survival rates aren’t quite as high, though they are improving with each passing year.

Rates of Recurrence
There is the possibility of skin cancer coming back, which is why regular skin cancer screening is recommended for high-risk patients. For patients who have had basal cell carcinoma, it is recommended to see your doctor for a follow-up visit every 6 to 12 months. For those who have had squamous cell carcinoma, follow-up visits should be every 3 to 6 months to start. Your doctor can then reassess how often is necessary.
For melanoma patients, follow-up care will depend on multiple factors, including how deep the cancer has grown and whether it spread to other areas. Follow-up appointments are typically recommended every 3 to 6 months after melanoma treatment, but this could vary. Speak with your care team about what is right for you.
