Winship 5K draws thousands, tops $1 million fundraising goal
More than 3,500 people registered to run and walk in the 2024 Winship 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Sept. 28, with another 498 participating online. Together they exceeded the 14th annual event’s seven-figure fundraising goal, raising more than $1 million for cancer research and care at the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
The morning after Hurricane Helene flooded and blew through Georgia, an overcast sky and occasional sunshine greeted the 256 teams who trekked the 3.1-mile course around Emory’s Atlanta campus. They exceeded last year’s 209 teams and 3,135 total registered participants.

George Weaver and his Team Hope ran in memory of Weaver’s late first wife and to raise funds for Winship through the Allison C. Weaver Breast Cancer Fund named for her. Weaver himself is living with prostate cancer and is a Winship patient.
Stephanie Clark said she participates with Jay's Joggers in honor of her late dad, Jay, along with Jay’s widow and sister. “I feel like we’re not running just for my dad" who had pancreatic cancer, Clark said, “but for all of those who are struggling, living or have lived with cancer.”

The 15th annual Winship 5K is set for Saturday, Oct. 4, 2025.
