Sunil S. Badve, MD, FRCPath, is vice chair for Pathology Cancer Programs and a professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. A surgical pathologist and a translational researcher with expertise in breast cancer and thymic pathology, Dr. Badve has made seminal contributions to the role of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes in triple negative breast cancer and re-classification of thymic tumors. He is working through his research and collaborations to reimagine risk assessment in and capitalize on novel approaches to improve management of patients with breast cancer.
Prior to joining Emory, Dr. Badve was on faculty at Indiana University in Indianapolis, Indiana and at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illnois.
Dr. Badve is a member of the Cell and Molecular Biology Research Program at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.. He is an active member of ECOG-ACRIN Cancer Research Group, where he serves as the central pathologist (pathology chair) for several breast cancer clinical trials. He also holds a professional membership with United States and Canadian Academy of Pathologists. He is a pathology member of the National Cancer Institute's Breast Cancer Steering Committee.
Dr. Badve's translational research efforts focus on novel prognostic/ predictive markers in breast and thymic tumors. His team developed and patented gene signatures for thymomas and ER+ breast cancer. His current work involves studying the individual biological components that culminate development of cancer in patients with DCIS. The lab specifically seeks to apply multi-omics tools to understand tumor heterogeneity and gaining a better understanding of molecular mechanisms related to tumor aggressiveness.
Dr. Badve serves as the pathology chair for several large clinical trials including TAILORx, COMPASSHER2, COMET and EA4112.
Dr. Badve has over 260 peer-reviewed scientific articles and has edited two books, Molecular Pathology of Breast Cancer and Predictive Biomarkers. He is associate editor of Clinical Breast Cancer and serves on the editorial board of several journals including JCO Precision Medicine and BMC Cancer.
In 2021, Dr. Badve was inducted to the MilliPub Club, which recognizes current Emory faculty who have published one or more individual papers throughout their careers that have garnered more than 1,000 citations.

Dr. Badve has been the recipient of Bantz-Petronio Award for Translating Research into Practice at Indiana University. He has received the Vladimir Totović Award from the International Academy of Pathology- German Division and has been recognized as a Komen Scholar by Susan G. Komen Foundation multiple times.
