Community engagement in cancer research enhances scientific responsiveness to Georgia's needs, fostering collaboration and ethical discovery, a top priority for Winship. We have developed and curated a number of helpful resources for community engaged researchers and partners.

Engaging Our Community in Cancer Research

Engaging the community in all types and phases of cancer research brings important societal issues and the lived experience of Georgians to the forefront, informing scientists in ways that lead to studies that are more responsive to the needs of Georgia communities.

Community members engaged as partners in research help foster a collaborative and ethical foundation for scientific discovery and therefore is a high priority for Winship.

Resource Guide for Researchers and Community-Based Organizations

We have developed a resource guide designed for researchers and community organizations that are considering entering into a research partnership, but have little or no experience in community-engaged research. The information provided serves as a starting point for developing a foundation for strong community/academic partnerships to support high quality research that benefits both the researcher and the community.

  • American Cancer Society Cancer Statistics Center: This resource provides data by state and cancer type and other metrics.
  • County Health Rankings and Roadmaps: The annual rankings provide a revealing snapshot of how health is influenced by where we live, learn, work, and play. They provide a starting point for change in communities.
  • Georgia Rural Health Data Hub: The Georgia Rural Health Innovation Center's data hub blends powerful data tools and extreme ease of use to give our users an unprecedented amount of information in a single location. New data from a variety of sources are being added on a regular basis producing an even more powerful resource.
  • State Cancer Profiles: Dynamic views of statewide and county-level cancer statistics for prioritizing cancer control efforts across the nation.
  • U.S. Cancer Statistics: U.S. cancer statistics provided through a data visualization tool, public use database, and other tools.

Evidence-Based Interventions and Implementation Science Tools

  • Transforming Research into Community and Clinical Practice: Evidence-Based Cancer Control Programs: A searchable database of evidence-based cancer control programs designed to provide program planners and public health practitioners easy and immediate access to program materials.
  • Guide to Community Preventive Services (The Community Guide): The Guide to Community Preventive Services (The Community Guide) is a collection of evidence-based findings of the Community Preventive Services Task Force. It is a resource to help you select interventions to improve health and prevent disease in your state, community, community organization, business, healthcare organization, or school.
  • National Cancer Institute's Research and Practice Tools: Select articles that provide a broad understanding of implementation science, as well as resources to help advance implementation science, including research tools, practice tools, research–practice partnerships, and an orientation webinar on dissemination and implementation.
  • U.S. Preventive Services Task Force: The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force is an independent, volunteer panel of national experts in disease prevention and evidence-based medicine. The Task Force works to improve the health of people nationwide by making evidence-based recommendations about clinical preventive services.

Patient/Survivor Education Materials

  • American Cancer Society: Easy-to-read materials on a variety of topics including prevention and early detection, treatment, side effects, and survivorship.
  • CancerCare: Easy-to-read booklets and fact sheets provide reliable information on cancerrelated topics. CancerCare also offers educational workshops by phone or online.
  • CancerQuest: CancerQuest is a web-based cancer education and outreach program at Emory University-Winship Cancer Institute, designed to provide reliable information about cancer biology and treatment.
  • Georgia CORE: Based on a statewide needs assessment survey of 800 cancer survivors, Georgia CORE offers educational materials that address the physical, practical, spiritual and emotional needs of cancer survivors.
  • National Cancer Institute: NCI's patient educational materials, available in a variety of formats.

Regional Cancer Coalitions of Georgia

The Regional Cancer Coalitions of Georgia serve as gateways to cancer prevention and control resources. Based in Albany, Athens, Columbus, Macon, and Rome, these non-profit community organizations work hand in hand to provide cancer prevention, screening, and care coordination services throughout Georgia, with a special emphasis on rural and other underserved communities.

We aim to provide our community partners with easily accessible data to facilitate informed decision-making for program planning. To achieve this, we've created infographics for the top 10 cancers in Georgia, including information on risk factors, individuals living with HIV, and rural Georgia. These infographics can also be shared with your local community to raise awareness. You can download various infographics as ZIP files below.
