Discoveries and Accomplishments

The Cancer Prevention and Control Research Program has had a significant impact on reducing cancer risk, morbidity and mortality, as well as improving the quality of life for patients with cancer in Georgia.

The Cancer Prevention and Control Research Program has focused on addressing Georgia’s disparities in cancer outcomes, including the excess incidence of tobacco-related cancers, obesity-related cancers and HIV-related cancers.

  • Studying breast cancer disparities in Georgia
  • Implementing cancer prevention initiatives in rural Georgia
  • Enhancing lifelong care for cancer survivors
  • Investigating disparities in HIV-positive cancer patients in Georgia

Future Focus

Our strategy is to contribute transformational discoveries that ultimately translate to the reduction of the cancer burden and inequities in Georgia. We envision expanding community outreach to disseminate research findings and expanded community engagement to inform research priorities. Our future focus aims to:

  • Accelerate research and community engagement to reduce inequities in the cancer burden.
  • Enhance the implementation of research discoveries in the state.
  • Continue building bidirectional communications with the community.
  • Promote team science and forge collaborations within and beyond Winship and Emory to maximally advance cancer research.

Our long-term goal is to influence public health polices and clinical practice through investigator-initiated and community-informed research, in ways that reduce the incidence of cancer and reduce the cancer burden among patients and survivors in Georgia.
