Innovation and compassion come together in the new Winship Cancer Institute at Emory Midtown, which will open for patients on May 9 at 36 Linden Ave. NE in Atlanta. Made possible in part with a transformational $200 million gift from the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation, the full-service center supports a unique model of patient-centered, multidisciplinary cancer care integrated with innovative research to provide the best patient outcomes and a personalized patient experience. A ribbon-cutting event on May 2 celebrating the opening of the building featured remarks from Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and several Emory dignitaries.
Winship investigators Douglas K. Graham, MD, PhD, Susan N. Thomas, PhD, Vahid Serpooshan, PhD, and Kelly C. Goldsmith, MD, have been awarded pilot grants from the Donaldson Charitable Trust Research Synergy Fund, a unique funding opportunity offered jointly by Winship, the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University.
The Association for Clinical Oncology (ASCO) named R. Donald Harvey, PharmD, director of the Winship Phase I Clinical Trials Unit, as an Advocacy Champion during the 2023 ASCO Advocacy Summit in May. Advocacy Champions have made meaningful contributions to ASCO’s advocacy activities throughout the year to ensure that every patient with cancer has access to high-quality, equitable cancer care.
Winship’s Discovery and Developmental Therapeutics (DDT) Research Program, joined by members of Emory’s Biological Discovery through Chemical Innovation (BDCI) initiative, gathered for a retreat on the Emory campus on April 28. Sessions were led by DDT Program co-leader Kelly C. Goldsmith, MD, Mark Goodman, PhD, Hui Mao, PhD, and BDCI co-director Huw Davies, PhD, and featured innovative research and clinical outcomes from Winship researchers. A special session focused on catalyzing collaborations between chemists and cancer biologists to drive the development of new cancer therapeutics.
Longtime Atlanta resident Dave Walbert never expected the pain in his back would turn out to be caused by cancer. He turned to Winship's world-renowned team of multiple myeloma specialists to treat and manage the blood cancer that was the culprit.
Winship Cancer Institute and the Georgia Tech/Emory Department of Biomedical Engineering are hosting a mixer for Winship and BME researchers interested in collaborating further on cancer research. The event will be on Emory's campus on Thursday, May 18, 4-6 p.m.
Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University will host the Biomedical Raman Imaging Symposium in the Woodruff Health Sciences Center Administration Building (WHSCAB) Auditorium, June 25-27. The symposium is geared to those interested in chemical imaging for diagnostics and research and will highlight advances in state-of-the-art Raman imaging spectral analysis.
The 14th Annual Winship Oncology Nursing Symposium will be held at the Atlanta Evergreen Lakeside Resort, Aug. 25-26. The symposium will cover some of the latest trends in oncology practice and care, with sessions led by experts in the field. Attendees will be awarded up to 18.0 contact hours by the Emory Nursing Professional Development Center.
