Winship has received renewal of the prestigious Comprehensive Cancer Center designation from the National Cancer Institute, ensuring its continuing place in the top tier of cancer centers in the United States—and as Georgia’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
A new study led by Winship member Reshma Jagsi, MD, DPhil, and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that women, racial and ethnic minorities and individuals identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer are disproportionately affected by workplace mistreatment in academic medicine, and this mistreatment negatively impacts their mental health.
A phase 3 trial evaluated at Winship shows promising results with Tumor Treating Fields therapy in combination with standard of care for patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer previously treated with platinum-based chemotherapy. The trial’s primary investigator, Winship member Ticiana Leal, MD, recently presented the results at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting.
Winship member Renee Read, PhD, is the Emory principal investigator for a new multi-institutional Synergistic Idea Award from the Department of Defense Office of Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs. The $2 million grant, a collaboration with UT Southwestern Medical Center and Indiana University School of Medicine, will advance pre-clinical testing of drugs that target Hippo and Axl-MAP kinase pathways in schwannoma, a type of rare tumor that forms in the nervous system.
Winship member Hui Mao, PhD, was elected a fellow of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine in recognition of his work in the design, synthesis and characterization of magnetic iron oxide nanomaterials for MRI molecular imaging and for developing MRS-based methods to study the metabolism of brain tumors and monitor treatment response.
