Promising results from the Phase 3 LUNAR clinical trial for non-small cell lung cancer led by Winship medical oncologist Ticiana Leal, MD, were recently published by The Lancet Oncology. The trial evaluated the use of Tumor Treating Fields therapy together with standard systemic treatments for patients with metastatic disease after platinum-based therapies.
Winship hematologist-oncologist Ajay K. Nooka, MD, MPH, has been named Winship’s associate director for clinical research, effective Sept. 1. In this role, Nooka will provide strategic oversight for all clinical research conducted at Winship, with a focus on supporting high-quality, safe and ethical research and ensuring that patients have equitable access to Winship’s innovative clinical trials.
Winship surgical oncologist Patrick S. Sullivan, MD, has been named chair of the Cancer Committee for Winship and the Emory Healthcare Network. In this role, he will provide leadership to plan, initiate, stimulate and asses the institution's cancer-related activities in accordance with the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer requirements for cancer program accreditation.
Winship member Nikki Schmitt, MD, has received a five-year, $2.36 million U01 grant from the National Institute on Deafness & Other Communication Disorders for a phase 3, randomized study of atorvastatin to mitigate cisplatin-induced hearing loss in patients with head and neck cancer. Winship is the study’s coordinating center and will serve as the main recruiting site of the four participating institutions. Other Winship collaborators include co-principal investigator Nabil Saba, MD, William Stokes, MD, Anant Mandawat, PhD, and Jeffrey Switchenko, PhD.
Winship researcher Mingji Dai, PhD, has received a five-year, more than $2.1 million Maximizing Investigators' Research Award (R35) from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences for his study, "Synthesis and Study of Medicinally Important Molecules." The project will focus on the chemical synthesis and biological evaluation of natural product lead compounds that have the potential to treat cancer and other human diseases.

The ECOG-ACRIN Fall Group Meeting, taking place in Washington, D.C., Oct. 25-27, is seeking oral abstract submissions for its Young Investigator Symposium. Up to eight young investigators are invited to give a 10-minute oral presentation of their research. Abstracts are due Sept. 6.

The 12th Annual Winship Cancer Institute Gastrointestinal Cancer Symposium will be held at Winship at Emory Midtown on Saturday, Oct. 14. The symposium will feature an expert review of the latest procedures, technology and medical treatments; a review of national guidelines; and case-based discussions incorporating multidisciplinary care approaches, novel, recently FDA-approved drugs and clinical trial eligibility.
The 2023 BRIDGE Community Forum will be held in the Claudia Nance Rollins Building on Saturday, Oct. 21. The forum aims to foster collaboration, inspire innovation and empower communities to ensure a future free of disparities in breast cancer.
