Our team of hematologists is available to help you find the best treatment plan for any number of blood disorders, including thalassemia, hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura, antiphospholipid antibody syndrome and immune thrombocytopenia.
Treating nearly 1,000 hematological patients a year, our experts draw on Winship's vast resources in hematology, as well as other experts at Emory, to provide the newest, most effective practices and treatments. As specialists, our teams develop groundbreaking treatments that produce better outcomes and are adopted by other leading hematology programs.
Our specialized hematology program offers services at several practice sites, including Emory University Hospital Midtown, Winship Cancer Institute (Clifton Campus) and Grady Memorial Hospital. Winship community oncologists practice general hematology at Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital, focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of high or low blood cells and uncomplicated venous thromboembolism.

Bleeding Disorders Program
The bleeding disorders program delivers multidisciplinary care to patients with inherited and some acquired bleeding disorders. The team works closely with colleagues at Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, to provide our youngest patients with a seamless transition from pediatric to adult care.
Both the adult and pediatric bleeding disorders program are part of the Hemophilia of Georgia Center for Bleeding & Clotting Disorders of Emory.

Sickle Cell Treatment
Located at Grady Memorial Hospital, the Georgia Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at Grady is the comprehensive primary care clinic for patients with sickle cell syndromes. It offers coordinated and comprehensive care through a dedicated multidisciplinary team. This program also works closely with the Sickle Cell Program at Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, to support smooth transition from pediatric to adult care.

Diagnosing Your Blood Disorder
A complete workup may include a physical exam, blood work and imaging tests.
For patients with biopsies performed at outside facilities, the tissue samples are re-evaluated by Winship hematopathologists to confirm the diagnosis.
The most common blood disorders we treat at our clinics include:
- Thrombotic disorders, including deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism
- Thrombophilias, such as antithrombin deficiency, protein C and S deficiency, antiphospholipid syndrome
- Bleeding disorders, including hemophilia, von Willebrand's disease, platelet function defects and hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT)
- Hemolytic anemia such as cold agglutinin disease, hereditary spherocytosis, autoimmune hemolytic anemia and thalassemia
- Platelet disorders including immune thrombocytopenia and MHY9-related disorders
- Thrombotic microangiopathies, including thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS)
