Board-certified in internal medicine and medical oncology, Shirish M. Gadgeel, MBBS, FASCO, is a renowned thoracic oncologist specializing in the treatment of lung cancer and mesothelioma. As a physician on the thoracic oncology team at Winship Cancer Institute at Emory Midtown and Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital, he works collaboratively with radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, thoracic surgeons and interventional pulmonologists.
Dr. Gadgeel is a professor and vice chair for clinical research in the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Emory University School of Medicine. Before joining Emory, he served as division head for hematology and oncology and associate director of patient experience and clinical care at Henry Ford Cancer Institute–Henry Ford Hospital. He was also the Mary Lou Kennedy Research Professor in Thoracic Oncology at the University of Michigan and Michigan Medicine. He began his career at Karmanos Cancer Institute and Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, where he served as leader of the thoracic oncology team and co-leader of the Molecular Therapeutics program.
Dr. Gadgeel has served as faculty for the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and as a member of ASCO’s Education Committee. He is a member of the Career Development Committee of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer and serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the ALK Positive Group. In 2012, he received the National Cancer Institute Cancer Clinical Investigator Team Leadership Award.
Dr. Gadgeel earned his MBBS degree at Grant Medical College, University of Mumbai, in India, where he also completed an internship in internal medicine. He then completed an additional internship in internal medicine at LaGuardia Hospital, now Long Island Jewish Forest Hills, in New York, followed by a residency in internal medicine at Wayne State University. He also completed a fellowship in hematology and oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Michigan.

Dr. Gadgeel has conducted clinical research for more than 20 years and is the principal investigator on numerous clinical trials.
Publications
He has published extensively in peer-reviewed literature and serves as an associate editor of Clinical Lung Cancer. He is also a reviewer for numerous journals, including Clinical Cancer Research, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Lancet Oncology and Journal of Thoracic Oncology.
