Reshma Jagsi, MD, DPhil, is the Lawrence W. Davis Professor and Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology and Senior Faculty Fellow in the Center for Ethics at Emory University. Her internationally recognized interdisciplinary research spans clinical trials, health services studies and bioethics, with a focus on the individualization of breast cancer care and the promotion and career development of physicians. This work comprises over 500 publications that have included a wide array of mentees, generating over 34,000 citations and an H-index of 94. The principal investigator of multiple independent grants, she is Chair of the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center Board of Scientific Counselors, member of the National Academies’ Committee on Women in Science, Engineering and Medicine and Commissioner for the Lancet’s Breast Cancer Commission.
After graduating first in her class summa cum laude with a degree in Government from Harvard University, she attended Harvard Medical School and the University of Oxford, where she earned a DPhil and MSc in Social Policy with distinction as a British Marshall Scholar. She completed residency training in radiation oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2006 and joined the faculty of the University of Michigan (UM), where she later became the Newman Family Professor and Deputy Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology. She led UM to receive the Cornerstone Award of the American Society of Bioethics and the Humanities during her term as Director of the Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine. Widely engaged in organized medicine, she additionally served on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
In recognition of her contributions, Dr. Jagsi has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine, Association of American Physicians and American Society of Clinical Investigation, and she is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), American Association for Women in Radiology (AAWR) and the Hastings Center. She has been awarded an honorary doctorate and a number of lifetime and career achievement awards, including the Patricia Price Browne Prize in Bioethics, the Elizabeth Blackwell Award, the Marion Spencer Fay Award, MLive’s Women Who Shape the State Award, the Association of American Medical College Group on Women in Science and Medicine’s Leadership Award, LEAD Oncology’s Woman of the Year Award, ASTRO’s inaugural Mentorship Award, American Medical Student Association’s Women Leaders in Medicine Award, Association for Women in Science’s Meridian Award, American Medical Association’s Inspiration Award, American Medical Women's Association’s Woman in Science Award and AAWR’s Marie Curie Award.
