What to Expect on Your First Visit
Before you make your first appointment at Winship, someone from our referral team will talk with you and your doctor. If there is enough time before your first visit, you will be mailed a packet of information. It will confirm your appointment time and have helpful information about the Winship Cancer facility you will visit.
Depending on your initial diagnosis, you may be referred to a medical oncologist or an orthopaedic oncologist or surgeon. That will determine where you will have your first appointment. We see patients at the Winship Cancer Institute near Emory Hospital and at Emory University Hospital Midtown. You may request the location most convenient for you.
When you Arrive
When you arrive at the location of your first appointment you will check in at the front desk of the doctor you will be seeing. This will be on the second floor of the Winship Cancer Institute or on the first floor of the Glenn Building at Emory Hospital Midtown. The patient service coordinator will take your insurance information and collect any records you have brought with you for the clinical staff. You will then be asked to briefly meet with the oncology resource coordinator. Once this is completed, you will be escorted to an exam room by the medical assistant.
A nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or member of our staff will review your information and perform a physical exam. Afterwards, you will meet with your oncologist to go over treatment options and set up a treatment plan.
