Twelve rising high school seniors recently completed a six-week immersion program at Winship where they gained exposure to and experience in clinical, public health and basic science aspects of cancer research. The Winship Summer Scholars Research Program wrapped up on July 14 with a final symposium in which each student presented a research talk and scientific poster.

Winship member Wei Zhou, PhD, received an R01 grant from the National Cancer Institute for a collaborative research project, “Targeting LKB1-null lung adenocarcinoma with innate immune system.” The team, comprising eight researchers across Emory, will investigate a unique aspect of LKB1-mutant lung cancer with a focus on individuals who are naturally resistant.
Winship member Khalid Salaita, PhD, was awarded the Merck KGaA Future Insight Prize 2023 for research on a pandemic early alert system. The award comes with $540,000 to fund the next phase of research into an air sensor that can continuously monitor indoor spaces for pathogens that can cause pandemics.
Six Winship trainees from Emory University School of Medicine’s Departments of Hematology and Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Surgery and Neurosurgery are recipients of this year's Nell W. and William S. Elkin Fellowships and Chester P. Rochfort Scholarships. The awards are given out annually to extraordinary physician-scientists enrolled in eligible Emory training programs who have career goals in the research and treatment or prevention of cancer.
Garrett Cooper, a Genetics and Molecular Biology PhD student in the lab of Winship member Andrew Hong, MD, received the Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA for Individual Predoctoral Fellows (F31) award from the National Cancer Institute. The award will support Cooper’s research project, "The role of DPF2 stability in SMARCB1-deficient cancers."

The 14th Annual Winship Oncology Nursing Symposium will be held at the Atlanta Evergreen Lakeside Resort, Aug. 25-26. The symposium will cover some of the latest trends in oncology practice and care, with sessions led by experts in the field. Attendees will be awarded up to 18.0 contact hours by the Emory Nursing Professional Development Center.
