First lady Jill Biden toured the lab of Winship researcher Philip Santangelo, PhD, the first recipient of funding from a new federal agency supporting the Biden Cancer Moonshot, and discussed his groundbreaking research to train the immune system to treat and cure cancers and other diseases.

Winship researcher Ilana Graetz, PhD, has been named the new leader of Winship’s Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC) Research Program, effective Sept. 1. Graetz will oversee the program’s strategic development and collaborate with co-leader Mylin Torres, MD, on membership activities, pilot funding, research opportunities and other initiatives in alignment with Winship’s mission and strategic plan and in support of the program’s goals.
The National Institutes of Health awarded Emory University $5.6 million to establish a national center to advance pioneering technology for cellular mechanics. The center is directed by Winship researcher Khalid Salaita, PhD, whose lab developed the first sensors for detecting cell-receptor forces at the molecular level.
Patel and Emory Proton Therapy Center designated as SpaceOAR Hydrogel Center of Excellence

, and the Emory Proton Therapy Center have been recognized as a SpaceOAR Hydrogel Center of Excellence for use of the product to minimize the side effects of radiation therapy for patients undergoing prostate cancer treatment. Patel was honored for his expertise and experience with placement of the SpaceOAR Hydrogel, a technology that is offered at several Winship locations. The 12th Annual Winship Cancer Institute Gastrointestinal Cancer Symposium will be held at Winship at Emory Midtown on Saturday, Oct. 14. The symposium will feature an expert review of the latest procedures, technology and medical treatments; a review of national guidelines; and case-based discussions incorporating multidisciplinary care approaches, novel, recently FDA-approved drugs and clinical trial eligibility.
The 2023 BRIDGE Community Forum will be held in the Claudia Nance Rollins Building on Saturday, Oct. 21. The forum aims to foster collaboration, inspire innovation and empower communities to ensure a future free of disparities in breast cancer.
