Advanced practice providers – including nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, nurses and APP students – gathered on the Emory University campus Sept. 13-14 to learn the latest, evidence-based strategies to optimize care and outcomes for patients with cancer.
Hosted by Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University and Emory Healthcare, the 3rd annual Updates in Hematology and Oncology for the Advanced Practice Provider welcomed over 100 in-person and virtual attendees for the two-day continuing education conference. The meeting featured more than a dozen sessions, with Winship experts providing comprehensive instruction across a range of cancer types and treatment modalities. Additionally, a writing workshop helped participants hone their skills in the preparation of scientific abstracts.

A highlight of the conference was the announcement of the inaugural Charise Gleason Excellence in Oncology Education Award, which honors Charise Gleason, MSN, NP-BC, AOCNP, and her significant contributions to the educational and professional advancement of oncology APPs at Winship. The award, given annually to outstanding Winship APPs for their role in advancing education, provides funding for recipients to pursue professional development activities such as attending national conferences and enrolling in certificate programs.
“We are proud to create a permanent legacy honoring Charise, an exceptional leader and champion of advanced practice provider education,” says conference organizer Danielle Roberts, MS, MMSc, PA-C, who serves as Winship’s associate chief of education for APPs and co-director of the Hematology and Medical Oncology APP Fellowship Program. “Charise’s namesake award will establish an educational fund to help further the professional goals of Winship APPs, recognizing their essential role in cancer care and in the lives of patients and their families.”
The 2024 Charise Gleason Excellence in Oncology Education Award recipients are Winship physician assistants Angela Hatcher, PA-C, and Sujata Kane, MS, RD, PA-C. Hatcher and Kane were selected through an application process that included submitting a personal statement on how they plan to use the funding. Letters of recommendation from their colleagues described how Hatcher and Kane enhance the knowledge base and skills of those around them and create a nurturing learning environment for the APP fellows whom they mentor.
