Biography
Richard A. Moffitt, PhD, is an associate professor in the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology with a joint appointment in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Moffitt is a member of the Cell and Molecular Biology Research Program at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University.
Before joining Emory, Dr. Moffitt served as graduate program director of Biomedical Informatics and as an assistant professor at Stony Brook University.
Education
Dr. Moffitt earned his PhD in bioengineering from the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. He completed his postdoctoral training at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Research
Dr. Moffitt’s research centers on computational and omics‑based approaches to understand cellular heterogeneity in human cancer, with a focus on pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. He develops methods to improve gene expression analysis and pioneered a virtual microdissection strategy that identifies distinct cellular sources within tumors. This work helped define clinically relevant pancreatic cancer subtypes and revealed major differences in stromal and immune cell populations.
Dr. Moffitt directs efforts to characterize tumor ecosystems using single‑cell RNA sequencing, spatial sequencing and spatial proteomics. He also created the pdacR R package, a curated resource that streamlines exploration of pancreatic cancer gene expression data.
He also leads efforts to enable secure, privacy-preserving, centralized analysis of electronic health records and other linked data. His work on harmonizing units of measurement, visit types, and mortality has improved multi-site analysis for the National Clinical Cohort Collaborative and All of Us.
