Our Commitment to Sustainability
The Brundtland Commission defined sustainable development in 1987 as development that meets present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
As part of its commitment to creating positive change in the world, Emory has identified sustainability as one of the university's top priorities. At Winship Cancer Institute, we share that commitment and are dedicated to advancing sustainability in our work.
LEED Certification
As part of this commitment, Emory is a national leader in green building, with more LEED-certified square footage than any other college or university campus in the nation. This leadership includes facilities at Winship Cancer Institute.
Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University (Clifton campus)
Winship Cancer Institute at Emory's Clifton campus, a 280,000-square-foot facility opened in 2003, is certified by the U.S. Green Building Council through its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.
Winship Cancer Institute at Emory Midtown
Winship Cancer Institute at Emory Midtown, opened in 2023, is a state-of-the-art cancer care facility designed to enhance the patient experience through environmentally conscious design.
Using a holistic approach to energy-efficient design, the building is projected to consume nearly 37% less energy annually than the average U.S. hospital.
The facility is pursuing LEED Silver certification, with a focus on seven key areas:
- Site and transportation
- Energy and atmosphere
- Water efficiency
- Materials and innovation
- Green spaces and areas for respite
- Enhancing the patient experience
- Indoor environmental quality
