Winship offers comprehensive care centered on the patient and using a collaborative approach in which care teams coordinate across disciplines. In addition to providing advanced treatments, Winship facilitates cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis and survivorship.

Cancer care at Emory University Hospital through Winship is one of the top-ranked cancer programs in the nation according to U.S. News & World Report. Nurses at Emory University Hospital, Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital, Emory Johns Creek Hospital and The Emory Clinic have earned the prestigious Magnet® recognition for nursing excellence.

Opened in May 2023, Winship Cancer Institute at Emory Midtown is designed to deliver a unique model of cancer care that places patients at the center of specialized care communities bridging outpatient and inpatient care and integrating groundbreaking research into preventions and treatments.

The Emory Proton Therapy Center is the only proton center in the state of Georgia and it opened in December 2018.

Winship physicians provide care at eight Emory Healthcare locations and three affiliated locations.

Winship researchers conducted more than 600 interventional clinical trials and enrolled more than 900 patients to those trials in 2023. Winship has the largest unit in Georgia for phase I clinical trials, which are crucial for introducing new cancer therapies. Winship works with the Georgia Center for Oncology Research and Education (GeorgiaCore) to partner with community-based physicians to expand availability of cancer clinical trials throughout Georgia. Winship also serves patients through the Winship Cancer Network, a partnership with community hospitals enhancing access to research and treatment.

Winship is one of 30 inaugural U.S. cancer centers selected as a Lead Academic Participating Site for the NCI's National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN). The NCTN serves as the NCI's primary infrastructure to conduct phase I and II clinical trials.

Winship has more than 590 members (core, associate and coalition), representing research faculty from 39 departments in four Emory schools, as well as Georgia Tech and partner institutions (as of January 2024). Their cancer research was supported by $136 million in grant research funding in November 2022-October 2023. These researchers collaborate with scientists and clinicians from around the world and with national and state agencies, including the NIH, CDC, American Cancer Society and Georgia Research Alliance.

Through its Community Outreach and Engagement program, Winship facilitates research and disseminates evidence-based interventions in Georgia with the goal of reducing health disparities and the cancer burden across the state.

Winship also provides comprehensive, cancer-focused training and education opportunities across the continuum of learners, starting in middle school and spanning undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral and career development programs. In 2022, U.S. News & World Report released their list of Best Global Universities for Oncology ranking Emory University 29th in the world.

Winship Cancer Institute was founded in 1937, with a generous gift to Emory from Coca-Cola President Robert Winship Woodruff, who named the center after his grandfather as a way of honoring his mother who passed away from cancer. His mission was that no one would need to leave Georgia for the best cancer treatment. He envisioned doctors and researchers working together in the same facility, so that scientists would be reminded of the urgency of their work and motivated to bring innovative treatments to patients.

Winship treated 168 patients in its first year of operation; now, Winship sees more than 17,000 new patients every year.
