Winship physician and researcher, Reshma Jagsi, MD, DPhil, has been selected as the recipient of the Elizabeth Blackwell Award from the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA).
The award, named in honor of the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States, recognizes individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary dedication to advancing women in medicine and promoting equity in health care.
“Dr. Jagsi’s dedication to advancing women in medicine, promoting equity and improving health care for all exemplifies the core values that drive our organization,” says Eliza Chin, MD, MPH, executive director, American Medical Women’s Association. “Through her leadership, advocacy and scholarly contributions, she has made a lasting impact on the medical community. We are honored to celebrate her achievements and the inspiration they provide to others in the field.”
“The Blackwell Award is so meaningful, not only because it carries the name of a woman whose pioneering efforts transformed medicine, but also because it is awarded by an organization, AMWA, that champions efforts to serve the core values that have long been shared by American citizens: opportunity, access, and excellence,” says Jagsi.
A nationally recognized leader in radiation oncology and health equity research, Jagsi has dedicated her career to addressing disparities in health outcomes and advancing gender equity in the medical profession. She has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine, Association of American Physicians and American Society of Clinical Investigation for her work in these areas. A practicing radiation oncologist specializing in breast cancer, she has authored more than 500 publications in high-impact journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA and The Lancet and serves as principal investigator on multiple NIH-funded studies. She is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society for Radiation Oncology, American Association for Women in Radiology, and the Hastings Center.
The award ceremony will take place on March 29, 2025, at the Women in Healthcare World Congress Gala at Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts.
