Follow Up Care

Your regular follow-up care will involve frequent visits to your oncologist and care team. Initially, follow-up appointments occur every three to four months for several years after treatment, then reduce to once or twice a year thereafter. During these appointments, your doctor will assess any side effects from treatment and may order lab tests and imaging scans to check if your cancer has returned or spread to other parts of the body.

It's important to inform your doctor of any side effects or concerns you may have. The adverse effects of cancer and its treatments can persist for several months post-treatment. Ask your doctor for a recommended follow-up care plan, which may include telehealth visits as an option.

At Winship, we are taking advantage of the latest technologies to provide our patients with options for their care. One of these options is telehealth. Through a telehealth visit, you will connect with your doctor or care team by online video with your mobile device or computer.

Using Emory Healthcare's Emory Connected Care program, we are scheduling telehealth visits for patients whose care can be handled through our telehealth services. At the moment, all telehealth visits are initiated by our care team. If you are interested in holding a future appointment using telehealth, please contact your doctor or care team.

In addition to providing follow-up medical care, we recognize the importance of the psychological and emotional aspects of living with a cancer diagnosis and of dealing with side effects. Our supportive oncology team addresses these issues in a timely manner with additional support from counselors, dietitians and social service professionals.
