Clinical trials are research studies designed to answer specific questions about cancer and its treatment. Some trials provide access to promising new therapies that are not yet available through standard clinical practice. Others evaluate new approaches to surgery, drug therapy or radiation therapy. Many clinical trials also examine ways to improve quality of life for people with cancer.
During your consultation, your physician will discuss any clinical trials for which you may be eligible and explain the study's purpose, risks and potential benefits.
Participation in a proton therapy clinical trial is voluntary. Patients who enroll in clinical trials often receive additional care coordination and support from the research team. Clinical trials also help researchers develop better treatments for future patients, just as today's patients benefit from advances made possible through past research studies.
