Understanding Liver Cancer Survival Rates

It can be challenging to understand how liver cancer survival rates are calculated. Survival rates give you an idea — but not an exact prediction — of your chances for surviving liver cancer. They are based on data gathered on the percentage of people with a similar type and stage of cancer still alive five years after diagnosis. This means it’s important to keep in mind that today’s prognosis is based on the treatments we had available to patients five years ago. Typically, survival rates are categorized into three groups of cancer:

  • Localized. There is no sign that the cancer has spread outside of the liver.
  • Regional. The cancer has spread outside the liver to nearby structures or lymph nodes.
  • Distant. The cancer has spread to distant parts of the body, such as the lungs or bones.

The primary liver cancer prognosis tends to be higher for people who’ve undergone surgery to remove the cancer. And for people with early-stage liver cancer who have a liver transplant, the five-year survival rate ranges between 60 and 70%.
