Biography

Michael Koval, PhD, is a professor with joint appointmentsd in the Departemnt of Medicine and the Department of Cell Biology at Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Koval serves as scientific director of the Integrated Cellular Imaging Shared Resource at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University. In this role, he provides scientific direction for the establishment, implementation and standard operating procedures and processes for the core.

Education

Dr. Koval earned his PhD from The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

Research

Dr. Koval's laboratory is defining the molecular machinery that regulates formation of gap junctions (which coordinate intercellular signaling) and tight junctions (which promote tissue barrier function). Understanding how junctions are pathologically misregulated during lung injury will help define control points that can potentially enhance lung cell communication and pulmonary barrier function.
