Cell and Molecular Biology Discoveries and Accomplishments

Program members have uncovered novel insights into the roles of energy metabolism and cellular signaling in tumorigenesis and drug resistance. They have identified new components of intra-tumoral signaling pathways, elucidated mechanisms of communication between tumor cells and the microenvironment, assessed the impact of these signals on cancer cell behaviors, and pinpointed novel therapeutic targets.

Recent program highlights among other collaborative research efforts and clinical translations showing the impact of the program include achievements in:

• Development of a MCL1 inhibitor
• Identification of platinum resistance mechanisms
• Discovery of novel cell populations and advancements in understanding DNA repair machinery

In addition, the program showcases a strong commitment to training future cancer research scientists and promoting diversity in STEM education.

The Cell and Molecular Biology Research Program is poised to make transformational contributions through understanding cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying cancer and drive novel therapeutic approaches. Key areas of focus include:

1. Advancing the understanding of cellular and molecular mechanisms that drive cancer development, progression and responses to therapy, with the goal of identifying new therapeutic targets and strategies.
2. Engaging in iterative bench-to-bedside research to facilitate the translation of basic research findings into clinical applications.
3. Cultivating collaborations to foster team science and integrate cross-disciplinary approaches within and beyond Winship and Emory, thereby advancing cancer research and reducing the cancer burden for populations in the state of Georgia and beyond.
4. Strengthening bidirectional communication with the community to support research aligned with catchment area priorities.
